Tip-up doors
The door your parents had, and it is still not a bad door
A tip-up — sometimes called a one-piece or a canopy door — is a single rigid slab hung on a counterbalanced frame with springs on either side. Push it and the whole panel tips outwards at the bottom and slides up and back into the garage. There is very little to it, which is exactly why so many of them are still working after thirty years.
They are the cheapest door we fit. They need very little headroom. They are simple — fewer moving parts than a sectional, and the hardware is cheap and universally available. And they automate perfectly well with a standard rail-driven operator.
The two honest caveats. First, the door swings outwards as it opens, which means you cannot park close to it — on a short driveway in a townhouse complex, that alone rules it out. Second, the weather seal is poor: the panel sits proud of the opening rather than flush in it, and dust and rain will find their way past.
If you have a tip-up and it is sound, keep it and look after it. If you are replacing it, look hard at a sectional door before you fit another one.

Automating a tip-up
A standard rail-driven operator with an arm that follows the door as it tips and lifts. Provided the counterbalance is right, it is one of the easiest doors to automate.

Rebalancing
The most common tip-up fault: springs that have lost tension, so the door is heavy to lift and slams down on closing. It is a quick, cheap adjustment.

Extension springs under tension can become projectiles. A safety cable through the spring is a cheap part that prevents an ugly accident — and it is often missing.

Three questions that settle it

Is the panel sound?No rust through, no rot, no twist. If yes — keep it and service it.
Is your driveway long enough?The door swings out. If you cannot park comfortably, upgrade.
Does dust bother you?If you sweep the garage weekly, a sectional will change your life.
Is the counterbalance right?A heavy tip-up is a spring adjustment, not a new door.
Are safety cables fitted?If not, that is a cheap and urgent fix, whatever else you decide.

Roughly R5 500 – R9 000 supplied and fitted for a single. It is the cheapest door on the market, and where headroom is limited and the budget is tight it remains an entirely reasonable choice.
Can a tip-up garage door be automated?
Yes, easily — a standard rail-driven motor with an arm that follows the door as it tips out and up. The one prerequisite is that the counterbalance is set correctly first. Automating a badly balanced tip-up simply transfers the problem to the motor.
Why is my tip-up door so heavy to lift?
The counterbalance springs have lost tension. It is the single most common tip-up complaint and it is usually a straightforward, inexpensive adjustment. If the door also slams shut at the end of its travel, that is the same fault talking.
Should I replace my tip-up with a sectional door?
If you have the headroom and a short driveway, it is one of the best upgrades a house can have: you gain the full opening width, you can park right up to the door, and the dust stops coming in. If headroom is tight or budget is the driver, keep the tip-up and look after it.
Are tip-up garage doors safe?
They are, provided safety cables are fitted through the extension springs. A spring under tension that lets go without a cable is a genuine hazard, and we find doors without them regularly. It is a cheap part and there is no good reason to be without it.
