Fibreglass
Where fibreglass earns its place — and where it does not
Fibreglass — properly, a glass-reinforced polymer skin over a frame — is the least common material we fit, and we want to be straight about why. It is not because it is a bad door. It is because inland, in Gauteng, steel does most of the same job for meaningfully less money.
Where fibreglass wins outright is moisture. It cannot rust, it cannot rot and it does not care about salt air. On a coastal property, or a house near a dam, that matters enormously. It is also very light, which means a smaller motor and less strain on every component in the system.
And it moulds. A fibreglass panel can be cast with a genuine timber grain — not printed, moulded — which means it takes a stain-effect finish that looks remarkably like wood from three metres away, without any of the sealing.
The honest downsides: it can fade under a hard, unrelenting Highveld sun over many years. It is less impact-resistant than steel — a hard knock cracks rather than dents. And it costs considerably more than steel for a door that, in Gauteng conditions, is not obviously better.

Roughly R12 000 – R22 000 for a single supplied and fitted, and R20 000 – R40 000 for a double. That places it above steel and roughly alongside aluminium — which is precisely why, inland, we fit far more of the other two.
Do fibreglass garage doors fade?
Over many years of hard, direct sun, they can. Modern UV-stabilised finishes are far better than they were, but a west-facing fibreglass door taking the full Highveld afternoon for fifteen years will show it. This is one of the reasons the material is more popular on the coast than it is in Pretoria.
Are fibreglass garage doors strong?
They are strong for their weight, but they behave differently from steel: a hard impact cracks fibreglass where it would dent steel. If your garage door lives a rough life — a busy driveway, children, bicycles — buy steel and spend the difference on the motor.
Is fibreglass better than wood?
For maintenance, unquestionably. It will not rot, it will not warp, and it never needs sealing. For sheer beauty, no — nothing beats real meranti with a good finish on it. It comes down to whether you want a door you admire or a door you can forget about.
