Roller doors
The door for garages that cannot take a sectional
Every so often we measure a garage and find there is simply nowhere for a sectional door to go. The slab is low, or there are storage racks bolted to the ceiling, or a geyser and its pipework occupy exactly the space the horizontal track would need. That is the roller door's moment.
A roller door is a curtain of interlocking slats that winds onto a drum above the opening. It needs almost no ceiling space at all — everything lives in the box above the door — which means the entire volume of the garage stays available to you.
They are also the industrial standard, for the same reason plus one more: they scale. Roller shutters cover openings that no sectional door could sensibly span, which is why every warehouse in Wadeville has one.
The trade-offs are real and we will state them plainly. The curtain is lighter-gauge than a sectional panel, so a roller door is not as inherently strong. The box above the opening is visible and not everybody loves it. And the weather seal, while decent, is not quite what a good sectional achieves.

A residential single roller door costs roughly R7 000 – R13 000 supplied and fitted; a double is R12 000 – R22 000. Commercial roller shutters are priced on the opening and the duty rating, and we quote those on site.
Do roller garage doors need headroom?
Far less than a sectional — that is their whole reason for existing. The drum sits in a box above the opening and nothing runs back along the ceiling, so a garage with a low slab, storage racks or a geyser overhead can still have an automated door.
Are roller garage doors secure?
They are, when specified properly. Ask for a locking bottom rail, anti-lift devices and reinforced end retainers. A basic light-gauge curtain with none of those is the weakest door on the market — but that is a specification failure, not a design flaw.
Can a roller garage door be automated?
Yes. Either with a tube motor inside the drum — neat, quiet and leaves the ceiling clear — or with a side-mounted operator on heavier curtains. Both take remotes, keypads and battery backup exactly as a sectional motor does.
Are roller doors good for a home?
They are excellent where the garage cannot take a sectional, and perfectly good everywhere else. Where the ceiling has room, most homeowners prefer a sectional door for the better seal and the cleaner look from the street — but if you have racks on that ceiling, a roller door is the sensible choice.
