Garage door installers fitting sectional doors on a Gauteng home

Garage door installers you can actually check up on

Anyone can buy a bakkie and a drill. What you are really hiring is judgement: whether the springs get matched to the weight, whether the tracks go up plumb, and whether the person who quoted you is the person who arrives.

How to hire

Seven questions worth asking any garage door installer

The garage door trade in Gauteng has a low barrier to entry and a very high ceiling for damage. A badly hung door will bind, wear out its rollers, cook a motor and eventually drop. So before you accept the cheapest quote, ask these — of us, and of everybody else you phone.

Are your technicians employed or subcontracted? If the answer is vague, that is the answer. Will the person who quotes me be the person who fits it? Do you weigh the door before you spec the springs? Are safety cables included on extension-spring doors? Will you fit safety reverse and test it with me watching? Do you remove and dispose of the old door? Is the guarantee in writing, and for how long?

We answer all seven the same way every time: employed, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and twelve months in writing. A quote that is R700 cheaper because it quietly omits four of those is not cheaper. It is just smaller.

Professional garage door installers fitting a sectional door in Johannesburg
Tracks hung plumb, springs weighed, door balanced by hand. Boring, unglamorous, and the entire difference between a door that lasts fifteen years and one that annoys you for ten.

What our installers do differently

The bits that never appear on a quote

None of this is expensive. It is simply the difference between doing the job and getting through it.

We weigh the door

Springs are specified to the actual mass of the door, not estimated from the model number. Wrong springs are the single most common installation error we are called out to correct.

  • Correct spring = long motor life

We hang the tracks plumb

Tracks that are 5mm out of parallel will bind, wear rollers and load the motor for the rest of the door's life. It costs nothing to get right on the day.

  • Measured, not eyeballed

We fit safety cables

On any extension-spring door, a safety cable is what stops a snapped spring becoming a projectile. It is a cheap part that some quotes quietly leave out.

  • Standard on every install

We set the safety reverse

And we test it in front of you, with an obstruction, so you can see the door stop and go back up. If an installer will not demonstrate this, ask why.

  • Tested with you watching

We take the old door away

Removed, loaded and disposed of. Not left leaning against your wall for you to deal with on a Saturday.

  • Included as standard

We hand over the paperwork

Written guarantee, manufacturer warranty registered, remotes paired, manual release demonstrated. Then we go.

  • 12 months, in writing

Red flags

Signs you are talking to the wrong installer

We are not trying to frighten you. These are simply the patterns behind almost every remedial job we get called to.

A firm price over the phone, sight unseenNobody can price a door they have not measured. That number will change.

No written quoteA verbal number is a negotiating position, not a price.

"We do not need to see the headroom"Then they do not yet know which track system your garage can take.

Cash only, no paperworkNo invoice means no guarantee and no warranty registration.

Springs "the same as the last one"The last one may have been wrong. That is often why it broke.

Refusal to demonstrate the safety reverseIt is a thirty-second test. There is only one reason to skip it.

How to tell a professional from a bakkie with a ladder.

How do I find a reputable garage door installer in Gauteng?

Ask for a written quote, ask whether the technicians are employed or subcontracted, and ask what the guarantee covers and for how long. A company that answers all three straight away is usually a company worth booking. One that gets vague about any of them has told you something useful.

Is it cheaper to install a garage door myself?

It is cheaper right up until it is not. Hanging a door involves de-tensioning and setting torsion springs, which is genuinely dangerous work — it is one of the few DIY jobs in a house that regularly sends people to hospital. Add a door hung out of square and a motor sized by guesswork, and the saving evaporates in about two years.

Do you use subcontractors?

No. Every technician who arrives in a Clearpath vehicle is employed by Clearpath. It is slower to grow that way and we are fine with that — it is the only way to know what is happening in somebody's driveway forty kilometres away.

Are your installers insured?

Yes. Public liability cover, branded vehicles and technicians who introduce themselves by name. If anything goes wrong on your property while we are on it, that is our problem and not yours.

Can you install a door I bought myself?

Sometimes, but we will be straight with you: we cannot guarantee hardware we did not supply, and a surprising amount of the imported flat-pack door stock sold online is not sized or braced for a South African double opening. We will look at what you have bought and tell you honestly whether we can hang it safely.
