New garage doors replacing old doors on a Gauteng home

Garage door replacement — usually a one-day job

Rusted through, warped, twisted, or simply older than the car parked behind it. When a door is past saving, we take it out, square up the opening, hang the new one and take the old one away with us.

Repair or replace

When a door has genuinely reached the end

We would rather repair your door than replace it — a repair is a shorter day and a happier customer. But there is a point past which repairing is simply subsidising the next repair, and we would be doing you no favours by not saying so.

The clearest signs: rust that has gone through the panel rather than sitting on it; a door that has been twisted or bent by a snapped cable or a reversing car and never run true since; rot in a timber door at the bottom rail, where it has been drinking water off the driveway for a decade; and a door where the repairs are stacking up — springs last year, cables this year, and a panel starting to sag.

The maths tends to settle it. If a repair is R5 000 and buys you two years, and a new steel sectional is R11 000 fitted with fifteen years in it, the new door is cheaper per year — and it looks like a different house from the street.

  • Rust through the panel, not just on the surface
  • A door twisted out of true and never right since
  • Rot in the bottom rail of a timber door
  • Repair bills stacking up year on year
  • Panels no longer available in your profile or colour
  • A door too heavy or warped to automate safely

What a replacement involves

Six steps, one day, one price

The order matters. Every step here exists because skipping it causes a problem later.

1 · Free measure

We measure the opening, the headroom and the side room, and check the lintel and frame. You find out on that visit whether anything else needs attention.

  • No obligation
  • Written quote

2 · Old door removed

Springs de-tensioned safely, door taken down, hardware stripped out. It goes on the vehicle and leaves with us.

  • Disposed of responsibly

3 · Opening made good

Frame checked, lintel checked, fixings sound. If there is a problem in the brickwork we tell you before the new door goes anywhere near it.

  • No hiding it behind the new door

4 · New door hung

Tracks plumb and parallel, panels seated, rollers in, hinges torqued. This half hour decides the next fifteen years.

  • Measured, not eyeballed

5 · Springs weighed and set

New springs matched to the mass of the new door — never carried over from the old one, because the old ones are the reason you are standing here.

  • Balanced by hand

6 · Motor fitted or reused

If your existing motor is sound and has the pulling power for the new door, we reuse it and you save the money. If it does not, we say so.

  • Limits reset
  • Safety reverse tested

Reusing your motor

When it works and when it does not

Plenty of replacement jobs need no new motor at all, and we will not sell you one you do not need.

Motor under about eight years oldUsually fine to carry over. Limits get reset, and that is that.

Same door weight, same classSteel-for-steel is straightforward. Steel-for-hardwood is not.

New door significantly heavierA motor sized for a light steel door will not survive a meranti one.

Motor already strugglingIf it groans on the old door, it will fail on the new one. Replace it now.

Rail and bracket compatibleSome older rails will not accept a modern trolley arm.

Backup battery over five years oldReplace it while we are there. It is a small cost on a big day.

FAQ

Replacement questions

Cost, timing and what happens to the old door.

How much does it cost to replace a garage door?

For a like-for-like steel sectional replacement, budget R6 500 – R11 000 for a single and R11 000 – R18 000 for a double, supplied, fitted and with the old door taken away. Aluminium and hardwood cost more. If your existing motor can be reused, you pay nothing further for automation.

How long does it take to replace a garage door?

A single is usually a half-day. A double is most of a day. Add a new motor and it is a full day. Where the opening needs attention — a cracked lintel, a rotten timber frame — we will have flagged it at the measure so it does not become a surprise.

Do you take the old garage door away?

Yes, always, and it is included. The old door leaves on our vehicle and is disposed of responsibly. You should not be left with a rusted door propped against the boundary wall.

Can I keep my existing garage door motor?

Often, yes — if it is sound and has the pulling power for the new door. Where the new door is significantly heavier, or the motor is already labouring, reusing it is a false economy and we will tell you so honestly.

Should I repair or replace my garage door?

Do the arithmetic per year. A R5 000 repair that buys you two more years costs R2 500 a year. An R11 000 door with fifteen years in it costs R730 a year — and it changes the whole front of the house. Where the repair genuinely makes sense, we will recommend the repair; we do that regularly.
