A great deal of building has happened in Soweto over the last decade — extensions, second storeys, and above all garages. And a garage that has just been built deserves a door that was chosen for it, not the cheapest thing available on the day the builder finished.
The two things we see going wrong most often are both about specification. First, a door hung on springs that were not matched to its weight, which means it is heavy to lift, hard on the motor and short-lived. Second, an automation job done on the cheap: a small motor, no battery backup, and a fixed-code remote that can be captured from the street. All three of those are false economies, and the last one is a security problem.

Are the remotes on cheap motors secure?
Fixed-code remotes are not, and they are still being fitted. A fixed code can be captured from the pavement and replayed later. Insist on a rolling-code receiver — the code changes every time you press the button, and it cannot be replayed. It is a small cost and it matters.
I am building a new garage. When should I involve you?
Before the opening is closed up, ideally. Getting the width, the lintel height and the headroom right at build stage costs nothing; correcting them afterwards costs a great deal. Send us the plan and we will tell you what the opening needs to be.
