Steel

Why most Gauteng homes should simply fit a steel sectional

We fit more steel doors than everything else combined, and we are entirely unapologetic about recommending them. For the majority of South African homes, a powder-coated steel sectional door is not a compromise — it is the correct engineering answer that happens to also be the cheapest.

It is strong. Nobody is levering their way through a properly fitted steel door with a screwdriver, and it takes a knock from a bumper or a hailstorm far better than aluminium does. It is affordable — the lowest cost per square metre of any material we work with. And a modern powder-coated finish holds its colour and shrugs off the Highveld weather for years.

The one genuine weakness is rust, and it is a manageable one. Rust needs a breach in the coating — a chip from a reversing bumper, a scratch from a bicycle handlebar — and inland, on the Highveld, a chip that gets touched up is a non-event. Near the coast it is a different conversation.

The other honest caveat is weight: steel is heavier than aluminium, so springs and motor must be sized properly. On a double door that matters.

  • Lowest cost per square metre of any door material
  • Genuinely strong — resists forcing, bumpers and hail
  • Powder-coated finishes in a wide colour range
  • Woodgrain finishes available for the timber look without the timber maintenance
  • 15–20 year lifespan on the Highveld with basic care
  • Rust only where the coating is breached — touch up chips and it is a non-issue

Steel options

How we specify a steel door

The material is the same. What changes is the profile, the finish and the hardware behind it.

Plain and ribbed panels

The standard sectional profile. Clean, simple, and it suits practically every house in Gauteng from a 1970s bungalow to a new build.

  • Single: R6 500 – R11 000
  • Double: R11 000 – R18 000

Woodgrain-finish steel

Powder-coated to look like meranti. You get most of the look, none of the sealing and sanding, and roughly a third of the price of real timber.

  • The sensible compromise

Carriage and panel styles

Raised-panel and carriage-house profiles that suit traditional and Tuscan homes far better than a flat modern panel does.

  • Traditional elevations

Insulated steel

A foam-cored panel that cuts noise and heat. Worth it where the garage is a workshop, a gym, or a room somebody actually spends time in.

  • Quieter, cooler

Reinforced bottom rails

The bottom of the door is where somebody would try to lever it. A reinforced rail and a proper floor seal is a small cost and a real security gain.

  • Security upgrade

Custom colours

Colour-matched to the house, the trim or the estate spec. Most complexes specify a colour, and we match it exactly.

  • Estate specs matched

Steel vs the rest

Where steel wins and where it does not

We recommend steel most of the time. Here is where we do not.

Steel beats aluminium on priceBy a very wide margin — 40 to 80 percent on a like-for-like door.

Steel beats aluminium on dentsA bumper knock that marks aluminium will usually bounce off steel.

Aluminium beats steel on glazingIf you want large glass panels, steel is simply the wrong frame.

Aluminium beats steel on weightLighter door, smaller motor, easier manual lift during load shedding.

Wood beats steel on looksIf the house is face brick and you will maintain it. Otherwise, woodgrain steel.

Steel beats everything on valueCost per year of service, over fifteen years, is not close.

How much does a steel garage door cost in South Africa?

A single steel sectional door costs roughly R6 500 – R11 000 supplied and fitted; a double is R11 000 – R18 000. That is the best value per square metre of any door on the market, and it is why we fit more steel than everything else put together.

Do steel garage doors rust in South Africa?

Only where the powder coating has been breached — a chip from a bumper, a deep scratch. Inland on the Highveld, touch up the chips and rust is a non-event. Within a few kilometres of the coast the calculation changes and aluminium starts to look sensible.

How long does a steel garage door last?

Fifteen to twenty years with basic care, and often longer. Springs and rollers will need replacing along the way — those are wear items rated in cycles — but the door itself will still be doing its job long after the car that was parked behind it has been sold.

Are steel garage doors secure?

They are the most inherently secure material we fit. A properly hung steel sectional door that seals to the floor, with a reinforced bottom rail and a rolling-code receiver on the motor, is not a weak point in your security. It is one of the stronger ones.

Can a steel door look like wood?

Yes, and it is a genuinely good option. A powder-coated woodgrain finish gives you the warmth of timber from the pavement, with none of the two-yearly sealing, and at roughly a third of the price of real meranti.
