The northern sun does not negotiate
Pretoria North is hot. Not "warm summer" hot — genuinely, relentlessly hot, and a garage door facing north or west here takes an amount of UV that would embarrass most of the country. It shows up in three ways, and we see all three every week.
First, finishes fade and chalk. A powder-coated steel door that has taken fifteen summers of Montana sun will have lost its depth of colour, and a cheaply painted one will have chalked badly. Second, timber doors dry out and split if they are not sealed on schedule — and "on schedule" here means every two years, not every three. Third, seals perish. The rubber at the bottom of the door hardens, cracks and stops sealing, and then the dust arrives.
None of it is dramatic and all of it is manageable. Powder-coated finishes hold up well if you wash them; timber holds up beautifully if you seal it; and floor seals are a cheap, five-minute replacement. It is simply a matter of knowing that up here, the sun is doing something to your door every single day.

What we see on Montana driveways
Everything here is decided by the sun and the dust. In that order.
Faded and chalked finishesFifteen summers of northern sun. Powder-coating survives it; cheap paint does not.
Timber drying and splittingSeal every two years up here, not every three. The sun is harsher than in Joburg.
Perished floor sealsRubber hardens, cracks, and stops sealing. A cheap fix that most people never do.
Dust in the tracksNorthern Pretoria dust is abrasive. Keep the tracks clean and dry, never greased.
Double doors, busy householdsSprings and motors specified for how the door is really used.
Load shedding backupsLong driveways, big plots. A backup battery is money well spent.

Garage door questions from Montana
Sun, seals, dust and finishes.
In Montana and stuck?
Send us a photo of the door on WhatsApp. We can usually name the fault before we load the vehicle.
WhatsApp a photoMy garage door has faded badly. Can it be recoated?
Steel doors can be prepared and repainted, and on a sound door it is a perfectly reasonable thing to do — considerably cheaper than a new door. What we would say honestly is this: if the door is also rusting at the bottom rail and the springs are at the end of their life, you are dressing up something that is already finished.
How often should I seal a wooden door in Pretoria North?
Every two years, and closer to eighteen months on a west-facing door. The sun here is harsher than in Johannesburg and it will find any gap in the finish. This is not us being fussy — it is the difference between a door that lasts twenty years and one that splits in eight.
Dust keeps blowing into my garage. What can be done?
Replace the floor seal and the side seals — both perish in this sun and both are cheap. If the door is a tip-up, understand that it will never seal as well as a sectional does; the panel sits proud of the opening rather than flush in it.
Do you cover Sinoville, Annlin and Doornpoort?
All of them, plus Karenpark, Theresapark, Chantelle and the rest of the northern suburbs. It is a normal run for us and breakdowns are typically same-day.
