Aluminium full-view garage door with glazed panels on a modern Gauteng home

Aluminium garage doors

The lightest door we fit, which means the smallest motor and the least strain on the hardware. It will not rust, it carries big glass panels beautifully, and it is why every second new house in Waterfall and Fourways has one.

Aluminium

What aluminium is genuinely good at — and where it is not

Aluminium is a specifier's door. It is roughly a third lighter than the equivalent steel door, which cascades pleasantly through the whole system: lighter springs, less strain on hinges and rollers, a smaller motor, and a door that a person can still lift by hand when the power is out.

It does not rust. Not "resists rust" — it does not rust, and on the Highveld with its hailstorms and its summer downpours that is worth something. Powder-coated finishes hold their colour well, and anodised finishes hold it even better.

And it is the only sensible frame for large glass. A full-view aluminium door with frosted or tinted panels is one of the best-looking things you can put on the front of a modern house, and the frame carries the weight of the glazing without becoming unmanageable.

The honest downsides: it dents more easily than steel, so a reversing bumper leaves a mark. It costs meaningfully more. And a plain aluminium door on a traditional face-brick or Tuscan house can look distinctly out of place — this is a material with a strong opinion about architecture.

  • Roughly 30% lighter than steel — easier on every component
  • Genuinely rust-proof, not merely rust-resistant
  • Takes large glazed panels: clear, frosted, tinted or obscured
  • Powder-coated and anodised finishes, colour-matchable
  • Dents more easily than steel
  • Costs 40–80% more than the equivalent steel door

Aluminium options

Four ways people specify them

All of them fit sectional tracks, and all of them automate happily.

Full-view (glazed)

Aluminium frame with glass or polycarbonate infill panels. The architectural look, and it lets daylight into the garage without a single window.

  • Clear, frosted, tinted
  • R15 000 – R45 000 fitted

Solid aluminium panels

Flat, ribbed or woodgrain-effect infill. The clean modern look without the glass, and a good deal more privacy.

  • R11 000 – R38 000 fitted

Slatted and louvred

Horizontal slats with gaps for ventilation. Useful where the garage doubles as a workshop or houses a generator.

  • Ventilation without an opening

Woodgrain-finish aluminium

Powder-coated to look like meranti, with none of the sealing, sanding and greying. If you want the look but not the maintenance, this is the compromise worth making.

  • Wood look, zero maintenance

Automation-friendly

The light weight means a smaller motor and a longer motor life. It is a genuine running-cost advantage that nobody ever mentions in the showroom.

  • Smaller motor, longer life

Security note

Aluminium is lighter than steel, and lighter means easier to deform. Specify a reinforced bottom rail and proper locking, and it is entirely secure.

  • Reinforced rails available

Aluminium vs steel

The honest comparison

We fit far more steel than aluminium, and we are entirely comfortable saying so. But where aluminium is right, nothing else comes close.

WeightAluminium roughly 30% lighter. Smaller motor, less wear, easier manual lift.

RustAluminium does not rust. Steel does, eventually, wherever the coating is chipped.

DentsSteel wins. Aluminium marks more easily from a bumper or a hailstone.

GlassAluminium wins outright. Steel cannot carry large glazing sensibly.

PriceSteel wins, and by a wide margin. Aluminium costs 40–80% more.

LooksDepends entirely on the house. Aluminium suits modern; steel suits everything.

Where the house is modern and the brief is "clean lines and daylight", aluminium is not a preference. It is the only material that does the job.

How much does an aluminium garage door cost in South Africa?

A single aluminium sectional door runs roughly R11 000 – R20 000 supplied and fitted; a double is R18 000 – R38 000. Full-view glazed doors sit higher, from about R15 000 for a single and R24 000 for a double. Automation is separate, at R4 500 – R9 500.

Do aluminium garage doors rust?

No. Aluminium forms its own oxide layer and simply does not rust the way steel does. That is one of its two genuine advantages, and on the Highveld — where a hailstorm can chip a coating and expose steel — it is worth real money.

Do aluminium garage doors dent easily?

More easily than steel, yes. A reversing bumper or a heavy hailstone will leave a mark that steel would have shrugged off. On a sectional door a single dented panel can usually be replaced without replacing the whole door, which softens the blow considerably.

Are aluminium garage doors secure?

Yes, provided they are specified properly. Aluminium is lighter than steel, so ask for a reinforced bottom rail and a proper locking arrangement. Fitted correctly, with the door sealing to the floor and a rolling-code receiver on the motor, an aluminium door is entirely secure.

Can I have glass panels in my aluminium garage door?

Yes — that is precisely what the material is for. Clear, frosted, tinted or obscured glazing, or polycarbonate where you want the light without the weight or the risk. The frame carries the glass without becoming heavy, which is exactly what steel cannot do.
